We rented a Fiat in Rome and the Turk bravely drove out of the city toward Naples and our destination - Scafali near Mt.Vesuvius. We stopped for a picnic lunch along the Mediterranean Sea to snack on the wonderful cheeses, prosciutto, bread and fruit we bought in a Rome grocery store.
Then, on to Scafati to a very hard-to-find hotel that proved to be worth the search.

the hotel owner delivered a bottle of wine to us - and then billed us for it! |
At the foot of Mt. Vesuvius is a winery called Cantina del Vesuvio (wineries are called cantinas) where we had a lunch with wine pairing. Lovely setting and delicious food and wine. As we relaxed after a morning of tramping around Hurculean, we started to realize that extra wine was being poured into our glasses followed by some extra food, and then more wine. Until we had to say - no more - because we had a drive along Italian roads to get back to our hotel. We got to tour the small winery and purchased a delicious white wine.
