Our exit from the rugged Westfjords was via a ferry from Baldur through the Breidafjordur fijord to Stykkishomur with a short stop on the island of Flatey-a popular local summer stop. We would then be on the Snaesfellsness Peninsula, a fun one to say, that is home to the Snaefellsjokull National Park anchored by the 4700ft Snaefellsjokull Volcano, and glacier, that is famous for being the entrance to the center of the earth in Jules Verne's 1864 Journey to the Center of the Earth (though he never visited Iceland).

One of the most fascinating places we visited in Iceland was Djupaldnssandur beach in the national park. Volcanic activity (guess from where) created truely unique rock formations that took on magical significance to the Icelanders involving elves and trolls of course. I could have spent several days in this area, hiking and checking out the long beach of rock formations.

We hiked from our hotel at Amarstapi to next town of Hellnar along the coastal trail. Returned via inland trail which ended up being a challenging lava field 'trail'. Thank goodness for my AllTrails app! Turk was doubting me until we got to the point where we could see our town in the distance. But we had to climb over a fence to get back.
