Talking About Talkeetna and Denali

We wanted to hang out for a night in Talkeetna, after the tourists left. What a tiny, cute town - single street. Locals were welcoming. Food was delish. I needed to mail something and the post office closed for lunch. After lunch, me and most of the town showed up to do our business which is mostly picking up Amazon boxes. Everyone in line, except me and a young Russian girl were local and knew one another. So, lots of local catching up and calling out names. Postal clerk had a difficult time getting the Russian girl to understand what was needed to mail an international letter. One of the locals offered to help, but the postal clerk snapped back, 'Roger, this is my job. I will do it!".  So, Roger quieted down.

Farkle reunion at Denali - Joanne, Pam worked at resort for the summer

Our 6 hour drive through Denali National Park was better than I anticipated. Really, in a bus for 6 hours?  LOTS of moose and caribou. Scenery with clear views of Mt Denali. Lots of snow and more and more green appearing.

higher altitude views. no greenery yet

Plans for Palmer Panned Out Great!

From Anchorage, we drove to Palmer and further to a lodge property that was also a helicopter flightline. Along the way, we hiked at Thunder bird Falls to see more of the area.

the straightforward hike
Falls seemed small, but werent.

gotta love the graphic descriptions

Since we were early in the season, the resort was quiet, but at 8am each morning, the birds started their engines to take people out to glaciers and sightseeing flights of the area.

We had a hike planned to the top of the Bodenburg Butte, a 900 foot summit with views of the Matanuska River valley and Knik Glacier in the distance. We had 2 guides - 1 in training - which was fun.
Ready to go!

The time for our flight finally arrived and we got weighed, were told the landing could be cancelled any time along the way due to conditions, and then strapped into the helicopter. I got to 'copilot' the way there.
